DIY an Awesome Caramel Apple Bar for a Fantastic Family Night!
There is a crispness in the air, leaves are falling, days are getting shorter, so it must be Apple Picking Time! Along with that comes the seasonal Caramel Apple and the Caramel Apple Bar.
Crisp apples dipped in gooey, rich caramel are a wonderful treat this time of year. So here is our version of a Caramel Apple Bar. With a variety of ingredients, each person can create their own delicious autumn treat. This is a fun family night activity. You could make it a tradition.
Things you will need:
- Crockpot or Slow Cooker. We used a double crockpot which I purchased at a garage sale for $5. I love those “FINDS”!
- Apples. We used Granny Smith, (a forever favorite), Gala and Braeburn.
- Craft sticks for inserting into the apples for handles.
- Caramels and Chocolate for dipping.
- Toppings for dipping the coated apples into
- Bowls for organizing the toppings
- Paper cups or cupcake wrappers to hold the caramel apples
Possible Caramel Apple Bar Toppings:
- Almonds (chopped)
- Pecans (chopped)
- Walnuts (chopped)
- Andes Creme de Menthe Baking Chips
- Chocolate mini morsels
- S’mores Morsels Mix
- Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips
- Sea Salt Caramel Baking Chips
- Premier White Chocolate Baking Chips
- Semi-Sweet Dark Chocolate Baking Bits
- Peanut Butter Chips
- Turtle Minis
- (We used the melting wafers to drizzle over the caramel apples. Both the Dark Chocolate and the White Chocolate added flavor and beautiful decoration.)
How to create the Caramel Apples:
- Prepare the Apples. Wash and dry them. Place them in the refrigerator to chill. (We put our apples on a large cookie sheet on the patio table outside the kitchen door. This is not a good idea in freezing weather-We just want to chill the apples.) Chilled apples allow the warm caramels and chocolate to stick to the apples better.
- Unwrap the caramels and place into the slow cooker. We placed it on high initially. They take a while to melt. Once they start melting, turn to medium or low and watch to make sure they do not burn.
- If you want to melt chocolate to also dip your apples in, we found that semi-sweet morsels worked well. Again, place in the slow cooker and watch carefully. Once melted, turn to low. Remember, each slow cooker can be a little different so it is important to stay relatively close so nothing burns.
- Organize your toppings in bowls that the apples are easy to dip. We used plastic dollar store items. Afterwards, we washed them and saved them for another day. (just because they are inexpensive doesn’t mean we toss them.)
- Remove stems from the apples and insert the craft sticks.
- Dip the cool apples into the melted sauces.
